We'll enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes access to one of Scotland's most celebrated engineering achievements, exploring the historic canal system and discovering how innovative design continues to connect the country's waterways more than two centuries after they were first imagined. We’ll board the ferry for the crossing to Islay. Be sure to spend time on deck as the mainland slips away and the islands come into view. With sea air, rugged coastlines, and panoramic views toward Jura and Islay, the ferry crossing is more than transportation. It's the moment the pace changes and island life begins.
Once we step off this ferry, the next four days are all about slowing down, breathing the sea air, and experiencing one of the most remarkable places in Scotland. Welcome to Islay.
After settling in, we'll gather for our first evening together on Islay with a welcome dinner and a curated whisky pairing experience, offering a warm introduction to the island's hospitality, history, and remarkable whisky.
-
There are faster ways to reach Islay.
We could fly. We could charter helicopters. We could skip the ferry entirely.
And we won't.
Because arriving on Islay is part of understanding Islay.
The journey west from Edinburgh, the changing landscape, the quiet roads, the ferry crossing, and that first glimpse of the island rising from the sea are all part of the experience. They remind you that Islay is wonderfully remote, shaped by the Atlantic, and connected to the mainland on its own terms.
There are no motorways. No stop lights. No chain coffee shops. No rush to be anywhere.
That is exactly what makes the island special.
The Spirit of Scotland isn't about bringing luxury to Islay. It's about slowing down long enough to experience the island as it has welcomed visitors for generations.
Day 6 | Discover
From Field to Glass
Discover how Islay's land, people, and traditions shape every bottle.
Breakfast included at hotel
Interactive tour from farm to still
Lunch included
Cask tasting or cocktail class
Evening at leisure, dinner on your own
Today's journey takes us beyond the finished bottle and into the heart of Islay's whisky-making tradition. Throughout the day, we'll visit two distinctive distilleries that showcase different approaches to creating world-class spirits, while sharing a common philosophy: a deep connection to the island itself.
You'll experience the journey from field to glass, learning how Islay's climate, locally grown barley, traditional craftsmanship, and innovative thinking all contribute to the character of the whiskies produced here. Along the way, there will be opportunities for exclusive tastings, behind-the-scenes experiences, and hands-on moments that simply can't be recreated anywhere else.
We'll enjoy lunch together before continuing our exploration into the afternoon, discovering that Islay's spirit extends beyond whisky alone. The island's natural landscape, wild botanicals, and generations of local knowledge have inspired a remarkable culture of craftsmanship that can be found in every corner of the island.
This evening is intentionally yours to enjoy.
We'll provide transportation into Bowmore, where you're free to create your own perfect Islay evening. Wander the harbor, browse local shops, enjoy dinner at one of the island's favorite restaurants, pick up takeaway for a picnic by the sea, or simply relax with a dram while watching the sun set over Loch Indaal. Whether your ideal evening is sharing pizza on the beach, discovering a cozy pub, or lingering over dinner with new friends, tonight is an opportunity to experience Islay at your own pace.
Transportation will be provided back to the hotel later in the evening, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy one of the island's most welcoming villages.

Live music and dancing
Today is all about celebrating everything that makes Islay so special.
With exclusive use of the historic grounds at Islay House, we'll spend the day enjoying our own private island festival inspired by Fèis Ìle, Islay's legendary Festival of Music and Malt. Wander among local artisans, discover handcrafted island goods, enjoy exceptional food and whisky, take part in interactive experiences, and relax with friends while live music fills the grounds.
Throughout the day, you'll have opportunities to experience Islay in ways that go far beyond a traditional whisky tour. Whether you're testing your nose in our Islay Nose-Off, watching traditional craftspeople at work, discovering local flavors, or simply enjoying a dram on the lawn, the day is designed to capture the warmth, creativity, and hospitality that define the island.
As afternoon turns to evening, we'll pause for a well-earned break before gathering once again for the highlight of the journey: the release of Ardnahoe Cask #297. As the celebration unfolds, we'll enjoy exceptional food, unforgettable entertainment, and an evening designed to capture everything we've come to love about this remarkable island. Some moments are simply better experienced than explained.
Day 8 | Roam
Islay by Sea
Experience Islay's dramatic coastline, iconic distilleries, and unforgettable island hospitality by land and sea.
Breakfast included at hotel
Coastline distilleries and boat tour
Lunch included
Farewell dinner
Transportation included
Islay has always been an island defined by the sea. Long before modern roads connected its villages and distilleries, people, goods, and whisky traveled along these same waters. Today, we'll experience the island much as generations before us have, discovering its coastline from both land and sea.
Our day begins with visits to some of Islay's most iconic coastal distilleries, where there will be time to explore, enjoy tastings, browse the shops, and soak in the unique atmosphere of each location. Rather than rushing from tour to tour, today's pace encourages you to slow down, appreciate the scenery, and enjoy each stop along the way.
From there, we'll board a private charter for a leisurely cruise along Islay's spectacular southern coastline. As we take in dramatic cliffs, secluded bays, and breathtaking views back toward the island, we'll enjoy a relaxed seafood lunch featuring some of Scotland's finest local ingredients. Keep an eye out for seals, seabirds, and other wildlife that call these waters home.
Back on shore, we'll continue our journey with one final immersive distillery experience, bringing together many of the traditions and techniques we've explored throughout the week. It's the perfect opportunity to reflect on everything you've learned while enjoying one last memorable whisky experience before our time on Islay comes to a close.
We'll gather one final time this evening for a farewell dinner overlooking the coast, raising a glass to an unforgettable week of friendship, discovery, and celebration. From the first ferry crossing to the final dram, The Spirit of Scotland has never been about checking distilleries off a list. It's about experiencing the people, places, and traditions that make this remarkable island unlike anywhere else in the world.
Day 9 | Remember
Until We Meet Again
One last ferry crossing, one last look at Islay, and the beginning of the journey to whatever’s next for you.
Breakfast included at hotel, check out
Transport back to the Mainland, drop off in Glasgow and Edinburgh
After one final breakfast together, we'll board our private coach for the short drive to the ferry terminal and begin the crossing back to the mainland. It's a chance to take in the island one last time, reflect on the memories we've shared, and perhaps begin planning your next visit before we've even reached shore.
Upon arrival at Kennacraig, our private coach will continue to both Glasgow and Edinburgh, making onward travel simple and stress-free. For guests who prefer to fly, we're happy to assist with coordinating flights from Islay to Glasgow, allowing you to choose the departure that best fits your travel plans.
While the journey home begins today, we hope the friendships, stories, and spirit of Scotland stay with you long after you've left the island behind.
